Chasing The Sun

Hey there my friends.

I’m a believer in stories. By that I mean stories and how they relate to business…maybe YOUR business…and one of my fav ones is about chasing the sunset.

You see as entrepreneurs we often glorify the grind, we’re always “hustling” and sleep is for when you’re dead.

Right?

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a fan of hustle and grind and burning midnight oil and stuff but here’s the flip side of that.

You see the story I like to wrap around all those phrases is that as an entrepreneur we can spend all day…all night…all week grinding and sprinting to the east to watch the sunset.

***** PAUSE and think about that for a sec *****

Only to one day pick up our heads, take a breath and realize that the sun sets to the west.

Did you catch that??

But what that really means is that it doesn’t matter how cool your biz is…how driven you are or how much passion you have for entrepreneurship or cannabis…

If you don’t have a MAP then you’re destined to always be chasing the sunset.

The myth of 4:20 and cannabis…explained

4:20.
For a lotta folks it’s a random time of the day but for others…say those who enjoy or are connected to the cannabis industry it has even more meaning.
April 20th, or “4/20” is a pretty unique and special day of the year and if we just call it what it is it’s pretty much a special time of the day EVERY day.
So the questions remain and they are:::
  1. WHY is that day so important…and
  2. WHAT exactly does it mean?
Some say it’s the police code for a marijuana infraction…others say it’s the number of terpenes in the marijuana plant and yet others say it’s Bob Marley’s REAL birthday (which it isn’t).
The fact is that the whole 4:20 myth started back in the 70’s when a bunch of high school kids in northern California went off, after school, apparently seeking a hidden marijuana stash. The story says that they’d agreed to meet at “4:20” and would set out to find a weed stash that had been hidden by a supposed law enforcement officer so as not to get caught.
The lore then goes on to say that “4:20” became a kinda rally cry and secret code word for…well…smoking weed. And that secret sesh code lives on to this day.

Top 5 lessons learned from the Reno cannabis convention

Hi there my friend after a wicked fast and impactful conference I finally have some breathing room.

I know you’re super busy so lemme just get right to it. The Reno Cannabis Convention was incredible and for a lot of reasons. One is of course that I was a guest speaker and two is that the premise of this convention was education.

In other words it wasn’t about getting high…it was about educating folks as to the power of this plant AND the opportunities in business.

So without further ado…here are the top 5 things I learned and wanted to share:::

1. Know who your customer is. Yup. This is no longer stoner territory. Nowadays the clients and customers are mom’s, grandpa’s, children with autism or epilepsy, folks who have trouble sleeping and others who have difficulty staying focused. It’s the athlete wanting a recovery alternative and the baby boomer who simply wants to golf again.

The cannabis client is changing right before our very eyes.
You don’t have to only pick one…you just have to know what each one needs and how to solve that problem.

2. CBD is the soon to be king. The chatter is weed. Pot. Ganja. And whoa be to the person who has not given the proper attention to the red headed stepchild called “CBD”. It’s legal in all 50 states. It has all the health and relief bennies of big daddy ‘weed’ and the best part? You do NOT get high. As an RN and alternative wellness advocate this is all music to my ears.
So while the attention is on growing pot and dispensaries…we’re over here quietly building a “Hempire”.

3. Build it and they will come is a lie. This is business folks. Getting into cannabis is easy. Wicked easy. But being successful takes time, patience, skill and s stick to it mentality.  If you build it then you surely better be prepared to sustain it like an entrepreneurial pro.
Only 50% of businesses survive the first 4-5 years. You have a choice from day 1. Amateur or pro.

4. Find the right people. Your team is critical and I fall back to the age old mantra of “hire slow, fire fast”. One bad apple on your team can be the most toxic ingredient of all so choose wisely. Friends and family as hires? Uhhh….yeah…I think not. Your people are your front line.

5. Don’t convince, share. Everyone grows the BEST product. Every store owner has the BEST shop. Every marketer has the BEST ad copy. Yadda yadda. Don’t crush folks with crap they could care less about…smother them with love. Tell your story. The reason WHY you’re in this industry is way more important than the fact that you’re $2 a pound less then the other guy. Facts tell…stories sell.

So that’s it folks.

There were many lessons learned, friends made and honestly tons of take aways but these were the top 5 I thought I’d share first.

The Yellow Rose Goes Green

“I can’t believe you are in this business in Texas!”

Texas?

That’s pretty much how most of the conversations I have around my business begin.

Folks are incredulous…then curious…then amazed.

But I think those three reactions are simply based on the fact that most folks aren’t as informed. And that’s OK. I mean up until this point the general public has a very narrow view around cannabis and that’s frankly one of the reasons why I write this blog.

So yeah.

Right here, right now in the state of Texas we are now officially and legally growing, cultivating and selling medical cannabis.

In fact…

“Texas has joined a club of 29 states that have legalized medical cannabis, as well as 15 that have legalized medical CBD. Conservative states haven’t typically led the way in the marijuana movement but Denton said Texas is a sign that medical marijuana is gaining bipartisan support, particularly given that the effort was spearheaded by a Republican state representative.”

A Major Mag Talks Pot (again…)

When I started in the cannabis industry I put one thing on my whiteboard. Right at the top, front and center.

So when this happens it’s not by accident. It’s by intention.
